In February 2018, the first nau gallery opened to showcase the full nau collection. Forming an extension to the existing Cult Sydney Showroom in Chippendale, the nau gallery is designed by leading Melbourne practice DesignOffice and functions as an open, multi-functional showroom space.
Exposed brick and blockwork walls are tied together with a perforated folded metal ceiling and grey rubber floor creating a gallery like space. A central skylight is framed with a singular honey stained plywood form at high level, adding warmth and drawing visitors through to the rear of the nau gallery.
Styled with abstract landscape artwork by Brooke Holm, handwoven rugs, fresh greenery and ceramics from local artisans, the space is quintessentially Australian with a contempoary and fresh feel.
Mark Simpson and Damien Mulvihill of DesignOffice explain, “The nau gallery is housed within a very simple existing structure. We wanted to retain the spatial simplicity of the building and draw on references of Australian vernacular buildings, to create a gallery space which allowed products to be the feature.”
